The Roland Rhythm Plus PB-300 was designed to accompany the "Piano Plus" range and is much more than just an analogue drum machine. It also has a bassline generator which is sadly nothing special, (certainly not a TB-303 by any means) and it also features an arpeggiator and auto-chord function. Also, as far as we're aware, this is the only analogue Roland beatbox that has MIDI.

Of course, the rhythm section is the reason for its inclusion here and as the PB was released in 1984, it represents the end-of-the-line as far as Roland's analogue technology is concerned.

Sonically, the PB is limited to 8 percussion voices and sounds very similar to the CR-8000, (1980) but with an improved snare and rimshot sound.

The Hi-hats, (as with the CR-8000) could easily be mistaken for a TR-808 but the ride cymbal is unmistakably "CR".

The kick is quite unique in that it has quite a lot of bite, (possible intended distortion) and is relatively short. Through the right processing it could almost pass as a real kick! I wouldn't say it has the classic Roland bounce to it, but if all their machines had the same sounds, there would be little point in collecting them.

The patterns are nicely programmed and some are developed versions of the standard Rock/Rhumba/Bossanova beats that appear on all classic Roland machines.

For the sample pack, we have recorded all the pattern plus the fills. Some fills are shared, (for instance the first three patterns use the same fill) but that didn't stop us including them anyway).

Also, the extensive single hits part of the pack makes use of the Accent function, (here they call it "Nuance") so we've provided two versions of each sound (accented and non-accented). Seven of the 8 drum sounds are completely isolated (by searching through the patterns and fills) but sadly, the rimshot only appears with a closed hi-hat underneath so bear that in mind when programming your own beats.

So there you have it, the PB-300... not the most well known of the classic Roland beatboxes and in it's design, fairly limited but certainly one for all you "Roland completists" out there. Check it out now on the "Listen To My Beats" pop-up media player...

Recycle RX2 Loops:

Single drum hits (WAV):

This sample set contains 16 four-bar loops of all the preset rhythms and a further 16 one-bar loops containing the fill-in beats.

This set contains 232 multi-sampled individual drum hits covering all eight drum and percussion sounds. The samples use the dynamics of the original machine offering accented and non-accented hits.

What's so special about these sample packs? Quite simply, there isn't anywhere on the internet or in any commercial sample library where you can get this stuff. We made these samples because nobody else has.

All Dubsounds sample packs are sampled directly from our own drum machines. They are definitely NOT ripped from sample CD's, unlike many you see on Ebay at the moment, (which is a bit sad). All the rhythms are recorded directly into Pro-Tools from the machine's audio output and are not equalised, compressed or effected in any way. We want you to have the closest thing to the real machine as possible but with the added benefits of seamless integration into your VST host. The only thing we have done is to CAREFULLY remove any unwanted electrical noise and hum present in the signal, (if required) and taking extreme care to avoid damaging the delicate percussive transients. These samples were made for our own use first and foremost!
